Statement from Council

Updated

The Council of the Municipality of Magnetawan was presented with an opportunity last year to apply for a grant to purchase the lands at the four corners, formerly home to June’s Restaurant and the Magnetawan General Store. The Municipality was successful in securing the funds. The stipulation of the grant was that it must be used to create a public open space, such as a park, and it will fully cover both the purchase of the lands and the costs of developing the project. This means there will be no cost to taxpayers for either the acquisition or the construction of the new public space.

The grant was intended to support the beautification of the town centre by creating a vibrant public space featuring gardens, seating areas for families, public restrooms, small interactive landscape and play structures, a pathway to a point of historical interest, and open space for pop-up retail opportunities. The project would also provide free public Wi-Fi and additional parking for Trinity United Church.

In good faith, the Municipality presented two offers of purchase and sale to the current property owner, both of which were declined. Under the Municipal Act, Council may hold closed session discussions when considering the acquisition of land. After hearing from many residents about concerns regarding the condition of the lots, and following careful deliberation, Council made the difficult decision to proceed with expropriation.

The Expropriation Act provides for an appeal and negotiation process for the landowner, and it is the Municipality’s clear intention that the landowner will receive fair market value for the property.

Council recognizes that this decision was not made lightly but firmly believes that investing in the heart of Magnetawan will create long-term benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. By transforming this central location into a welcoming and functional public space, the Municipality is committed to preserving our community’s character while enhancing its vitality for future generations.
